As fast as we work at Farmgirl Flowers the list of things we will wait for is pretty short! The biscuits at our favorite neighborhood spot, the carpool onramp onto the Bay Bridge during rush hour and, of course, PEONY SEASON! We’ve been on pins and needles waiting for these beauties to bloom, getting daily photo updates from our growers (#flowerlife) until they were ready! We’re super excited to celebrate their arrival with you with this special arrangement chock full of these perfect petals!
At Farmgirl Flowers we promise to always ship you the freshest, most beautiful stems! While peonies are our favorite (and yours!) they’re the ficklest of flowers in terms of season, blooming for just a short time after the last hard frost. To take full advantage of their brief bloom we’ll ship you only the best of the best! This may mean you’ll receive a single variety of peony or more of a mixed bag. Either way, we promise you’re getting the best the season has to offer!
First thing’s first! Your peonies need a quick trim to help them blossom in the coming days. Using a pair of scissors, floral shears or even a sharp kitchen knife trim off ½” from the end of each stem. An angled cut works best here - not only is is a prettier presentation but it also prevents the stem from sitting on the bottom of the vase. This means it will be able to drink water more efficiently!
Regular trims once your peonies are in the vase will also help to extend their life! A fresh cut means your blooms can drink water more easily. If you can remember every day you get top marks! Don’t worry - every other day passes too!
Next, clean your peonies of extra foliage. Sometimes we like to leave the top two to three leaves for a fuller look and sometimes we like to remove them all for a less wild vibe. You’re in charge here - do what you think looks best!
Pro Tip: if your peonies arrive and the leaves look a little thirsty (read: wilty or droopy) it is best to remove them entirely. We want all that water to go to the petals - thirsty leaves will rob the petals of their H2o before it gets to them if they’re left on! To remove, gently snap the leaves off where they meet the stem (your clippers work well here too!).
Frequent water changes are one of the most important things you can do to extend the life of your peonies (and any flower, for that matter). Changing the water frequently reduces bacteria build up which, in turn, means longer bloom life. The same rule applies here that does to trimming - daily or every other day is best!
Good Ship Lollipop
We affectionately call the bud form of peonies a lollipop. You can expect these top heavy stems to open up on their own within a few days time to reveal all those gorgeous petals inside! If you’re impatient like us, gently pinch the top of any green portions clinging to the bud, peel back and remove. This will give your blooms a gentle nudge they need to start opening up!
Pro Tip: Need your peonies to pop in lightning speed? Place the stems in a cup of warm (but not hot!) water and then move them to a sunny spot in your home. Remove any green portions clinging to the bud and then leave them to perform some blooming magic!
Coral Charm peonies are one of our favorite varieties that you might find in your delivery - you’ll recognize them by their bright, orangey-pink petals! These peonies have a special magic of their own - as they age many of the blooms will begin to fade from a bright coral to the softest shade of peach. The color change is just one of Mother Nature’s many magic tricks. Enjoy the show!
To keep your blooms living as long as possible, place them a location that is neither too warm or too bright. Excessive heat will cause these beauties to overbloom lickety split, so take care to keep them out of direct sun and away from a heat source (like a heater). A table with indirect sunlight is best - we love to have a bunch by our bedside, in our bathroom or in our dining room!
Once your blooms start making like potpurri and dropping petals, you’ll know they’ve reached the end of their life!
