First things first! Unwrap all of the elements in your box. Discard all packing but keep the paper the peonies came wrapped in - save this to cover your workspace! Fill your vase with cool tap water. Peonies like a big drink of water so don't be shy here! Open the packet of flower food, empty and swirl to dissolve!
Design time! You're the designed here - the only firm rules here is to give ALL the stems (yes, even the greens) a quick trim before you place them in the vase. a 1/2" snip will do! Pro tip: It's also important to "process" your stems - this is what we call it when we remove any of the leaves or bits of foliage that will fall under the water line in your vase.
To design like a true Farmgirl, you gotta start with your greens! Beginning with the edges, place your greens into your vase. Make sure to criss-cross the stems as you go - this creates structure for the peonies to rest on! Now, time for the blooms. We like to add our taller stems on the outside and then group our shorties in the center, ideally 1" to 2" above the lip of the vase. Take care not to overpack your vase - once bloomed each peony head can grow up to 3" wide!
Last looks! Trim anything that looks too tall, rearrange a few stems - you're the designer here! TO help your peonies live their best life, choose a cooler spot with indirect sunlight and give them daily (or as often as you can remember!) water changes and stem trims!
