Thelma and Louise, peanut butter and (STRAWBERRY) jam, denim and denim (#canadiantuxedoforlife) - some things are just meant to stick together. Another famous pairing? Carbs and catci! Case in point: this sweet, little plant pal and a bag of our favorite CC Made popcorn. NOM NOM NOM. Read along for our top tips to help your new barrel cactus stay in fine form!
You know what pairs well with following directions? Popcorn! You're welcome.
First thing's first! This super cute barrel cactus is sporting some seriously long spines that will spike you lickety split! We know, we know, don't bite the hand that waters you. But this little guy doesn't need all that much H2O (more on that later) and he just can't help it! So be mindful of his prickly nature when you're unboxing or caring for your new plant pal
Pro Tip: If you get too close and accidentally wind up with a few new spines of your own (ouch!) find a roll of duct tape in that junk drawer we all have. Wrap a small piece around your hand and gently pat the affected area of your skin with the sticky side of the tape!
He might hail from the desert, but believe it or not your new barrel cactus isn't a total sun worshipper. He will live his best life around three feet from a sunny window. Watch carefully for color changes at his edges- a reddish tinge means he's getting a little too much light and you should find him a new, slightly less sunny spot.
Like most of his prickly friends, this little guy is super easy to care for! In terms of hydration, start off with a weekly schedule of 1/4 cup of water. Make sure his soil is completely dried out before the next watering. If you're finding his soil dries out sooner than a week (or is staying damp through to the next hydration session) adjust as needed! Watch carefully for signs of overwatering - you'll notice plumbing and then, eventually, the tell-tale yellowing at the base of the barrel.
