Ahhh summertime... The season of umbrella drinks, dining al fresco and catching some Z's in the form of an afternoon cat nap. Not that you need an assist, but this new plant pal is happy to lend you one (or two)! Your new ZZ plant is as easy as pie to care for (mmm, pie) so don't worry about it cramping your best summertime lifestyle. Following along below for our top tips to care for your new little lady!
Zamioculcas zamiifoila! Sounds like a Harry Potter spell, but its really your new green best friend! Botanical names are cool and all, but we much prefer the common name- the ZZ! She's about the coolest of the cucumbers in terms of care, so even the weakest green thumb will win with this one!
Unlike us, this babe doesn't require daily TLC (we told you she was low key!). In fact, the most common way to kill the ZZ is by over watering - quite the opposite to almost every single other plant in your urban jungle.
The key to keeping her hydrated? Start with a strict watering schedule and stick to it! We suggest starting with watering her once every other week (on the same day of the week), if you can! Pro Tip: water her in the AM - plants absorb water more readily at the start of the day so that drink of water will go even further! Start with one cup of water and check your ZZ for moisture. You'll want her soil to completely dry out in between waterings. Too much water? Pull it back a little! Make sure to check the base for excessive moisture - if she sits in H2O this is a sure fire way to start her on her way to the big compost pile in the sky.
Sunglasses, please! Your ZZ prefers low light - no direct sun here. Bright light will scald her foliage - keep an eye out for curling or yellowing leaves. Your ZZ will also lean away from sunlight - she starts making like the Tower of Pisa throw her some more shade (but, you know, the good kind)!
