Double, double toil and trouble (and all that spooky jazz) - it's HALLOWEEN time. How do we celebrate here at Farmgirl? We like to start with candy corn pumpkins (you can't do All Hallows' Eve without a little high fructose corn syrup) but, being professional plant ladies and all. you know there's going to be a photosynthesizing friend, too! Tales from the Crypt is the perfect plant pal to kick off the season. Her curling, dark foliage is hauntingly beautiful (see what we did there?) and will give any witch or spirit a run for their monster money. So kick up your feet, throw on a scary movie (or two) and get ready for those trick or treaters - just don't forget a little water for your new little lady! Follow along for our top tips to help your cryptanthus last longer than your Halloween candy.
Your spooky new plant pal will be ghoulishly glad with indoor conditions. A part of the bromeliad family, she is adapted to growing under the shade of taller, tropical trees in more humid climates. Start her in a sport with indirect sunlight at least three feet away from a window. Her foliage will tell you if she's getting too much (or loo little light)! If you see bleached or burned spots, it's too much. Move her further away from the light source. On the other hand, if her leaves go pale green scooch her a little closer to that light.
How about hydration? Since she hails from the tropical climes, your new cryptanthus prefers life on the humid side. Rooms with more humidity (like a bathroom or kitchen) will help her live her best life, but a quick misting of her foliage during her watering session works, too! Speaking of watering, here at FGF we swear by a weekly watering schedule. Your bromeliad will be happiest with a moderate about of H2O - you'll know you're on track when you notice her soil is moist, but not wet, when it's time for her next watering.
